Transportation, Logistics & Supply Chain

Practical paralegal support for the transportation sector — drawn from direct experience in the industry.

Industry experience matters. Knowing the difference between a freight broker and a freight forwarder, recognizing the practical implications of demurrage versus detention, understanding how a Bill of Lading actually flows through a chain — these are things learned in the field.

The practice brings that working knowledge to every transportation file: carriers, brokers, shippers, consignees, and freight intermediaries dealing with disputes, unpaid invoices, cargo claims, and the day-to-day commercial frictions of moving freight.

Out-of-Province Consultations

For clients outside Ontario, general consultations and certain document services are available — drawing on a decade of corporate experience and the practical legal background of this practice, without crossing into the practice of law in jurisdictions where this practice is not licensed.

What can be offered
  • General information consultations
  • Document review & feedback
  • Plain-language contract drafting
  • Business consulting drawing on corporate background
  • Referrals to lawyers licensed in your province
What cannot be offered
  • Legal advice on the laws of your jurisdiction
  • Representation before courts or tribunals outside Ontario
  • Filing or appearing in any non-Ontario forum
  • Any service requiring a licensee in your jurisdiction
Important: Any consultation provided to clients outside Ontario is general information only and does not constitute legal advice in your jurisdiction. Matters that require legal advice in your province or state must be directed to a lawyer or paralegal licensed there. This practice operates strictly within Ontario under the Law Society of Ontario, and the relationship with out-of-province clients does not create a paralegal-client relationship governed by Ontario law.
— 08 —

Pro Bono & Reduced-Fee Matters

Access to legal services should not depend on circumstance alone. A reserved portion of the practice's annual capacity is set aside for pro bono and reduced-fee matters — for individuals facing genuine financial hardship who would otherwise go unrepresented.

Pro bono and reduced-fee work is considered case-by-case, with priority given to vulnerable tenants facing eviction, individuals dealing with consumer debt issues, and other matters where the absence of representation would create disproportionate harm.

If you believe you may qualify, please mention this when you reach out.

Common Questions

If you don't see your question here, feel free to reach out — every consultation is confidential.

What is the difference between a paralegal and a lawyer in Ontario? +
Both paralegals and lawyers in Ontario are licensed and regulated by the Law Society of Ontario. Licensed paralegals have a defined scope of practice that includes Small Claims Court (up to $50,000 as of October 2025), the Landlord and Tenant Board, certain other tribunals, and notary services. For matters within that scope, a paralegal often offers more accessible fees while delivering the same standard of care and professionalism.
What is the new Small Claims Court limit? +
As of October 2025, the Ontario Small Claims Court monetary limit increased from $35,000 to $50,000. This means more disputes — including unpaid debts, contract claims, property damage, and similar matters — can be resolved in Small Claims Court without the cost and complexity of higher courts.
Do you represent both landlords and tenants? +
Yes — landlord-and-tenant matters are handled for both sides, though never on the same matter at the same time. The practice represents landlords pursuing eviction or rent arrears, and tenants defending applications or seeking maintenance remedies. A conflict check is run before any new file is opened.
How does debt collection work through your practice? +
For amounts up to $50,000, debt collection generally proceeds through Small Claims Court. The first step is usually a formal demand letter; if that does not resolve the matter, a Plaintiff's Claim is filed and served. After judgment, enforcement steps such as garnishment or a writ of seizure may be available. Each stage is discussed with you before any action is taken.
Do you handle transportation, logistics, or supply chain matters? +
Yes — drawing on direct experience in the transportation industry, the practice handles civil matters for carriers, brokers, shippers, and freight intermediaries. This includes Small Claims Court representation for unpaid freight invoices, cargo damage claims, demurrage and detention disputes, and broker commission issues (up to $50,000); notary and commissioner work for transportation-specific affidavits and statutory declarations; demand letters; and document review. Federal regulatory matters (CTA, Transport Canada) and U.S.-jurisdiction issues (FMCSA, DOT, U.S. customs) fall outside paralegal scope and are referred to a lawyer with appropriate expertise.
What transportation-related notary services can you provide? +
Common transport-related notary and commissioner work includes statutory declarations of cargo loss or damage (often required for insurance claims), affidavits in support of subrogation actions, certified true copies of bills of lading and other commercial documents (for Canadian use), identity verification for drivers and operators, and sworn statements regarding shipment events. Documents intended for use outside Canada may require services from a Notary Public rather than a Commissioner of Oaths — please ask in advance so the appropriate option can be confirmed for your needs.
Do you work with small businesses? +
Yes — small business support is a core part of the practice. With over ten years of corporate experience combined with five-plus years working in the legal field, the practice brings real-world commercial understanding to small business matters: contract drafting and review, collections through Small Claims Court, demand letters for unpaid invoices, service agreements, independent contractor agreements, releases and settlements, and general business consultations. Small business owners need accessible, practical help — and that is what this practice was built around.
Do you offer consultations to clients outside Ontario? +
General consultations are available to clients outside Ontario, but they are exactly that — general. As a Licensed Paralegal in Ontario, this practice cannot provide legal advice in jurisdictions where it is not licensed. What can be offered to out-of-province clients includes general information consultations, document review and feedback, plain-language contract drafting, and business consulting drawing on corporate experience. For any matter that requires legal advice in your jurisdiction, the appropriate next step is a referral to a lawyer or paralegal licensed in your province or state. See the Out-of-Province Consultations section for full details.
What kinds of matters can Small Claims Court actually handle? +
Small Claims Court is one of the most versatile civil forums in Ontario. With the limit recently increased to $50,000, almost any civil dispute under that amount can proceed there — breach of contract, unpaid invoices, business debts, property damage, consumer disputes, defective goods or services, unpaid wages within the limit, deposit recoveries, and even some minor personal injury claims. If your matter involves a debt or a civil claim under $50,000, Small Claims is very likely the right venue.
Do you handle WSIB workplace injury claims? +
Yes — the practice represents workers in matters before the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) and on appeal to the Workplace Safety and Insurance Appeals Tribunal (WSIAT). This includes initial claims, reconsideration requests, appealing denied benefits, and disputes involving loss of earnings, Non-Economic Loss (NEL) awards, or return-to-work issues. WSIB matters often involve strict deadlines, so reach out early.
Can you help with ODSP or Ontario Works appeals? +
Yes — appeals before the Social Benefits Tribunal (SBT) involving the Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP) and Ontario Works (OW) are within the practice's scope. Common matters include denied disability eligibility, denied or reduced benefits, overpayment disputes, and appeals from Internal Review decisions. These are also priority matters for pro bono and reduced-fee consideration where financial hardship is a factor.
What about other tribunal matters not listed? +
Other administrative tribunal matters within paralegal scope under the Law Society of Ontario — including the Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario (HRTO), the License Appeal Tribunal (LAT), and various other tribunals — are reviewed on a case-by-case basis. Reach out with details of your matter and an honest assessment will be provided as to whether the practice can assist or whether a referral elsewhere is more appropriate.
How much does an initial consultation cost? +
An initial 15-minute consultation is offered at no charge to assess whether the practice can assist with your matter. Detailed strategy consultations beyond the initial call are quoted in advance. All retainer fees are explained in a written agreement before any substantive work begins.
What documents can be notarized or commissioned? +
As a Commissioner of Oaths, this practice can administer oaths and affirmations and witness affidavits, statutory declarations, and certain Canadian-use documents. Please bring valid government-issued photo identification to your appointment. Note that some international documents may require a Notary Public — please ask in advance if your document is intended for use outside Canada.
Are virtual or remote appointments available? +
Yes — where the matter and applicable rules permit, video consultations and virtual commissioning are available. Documents are exchanged through secure encrypted file sharing. Please ask when scheduling and we will let you know what is possible for your specific situation.
How do pro bono and reduced-fee cases work? +
A limited number of pro bono and reduced-fee matters are accepted each year, with priority given to clients facing financial hardship — particularly tenants facing eviction and individuals with consumer debt issues. Each request is reviewed on its merits and circumstances. Please mention pro bono or reduced-fee inquiry when first reaching out, and a brief intake conversation will follow.
Is everything we discuss confidential? +
Yes. Communications between a paralegal and client are protected under the Law Society of Ontario's rules of professional conduct, including a strict duty of confidentiality. Discretion is foundational to how this practice operates.
